German Organ Mass

Organist Simon Lole explores Bach's so-called German Organ Mass, a work full of codes and symbolism, and part of the collection of four great keyboard works, Clavierubung.

Organist Simon Lole explores Bach's so-called German Organ Mass, an acknowledged masterwork of the repertoire, and part of the composer's collection of four great keyboard works, Clavierubung.

Simon presents a selection of high-profile recordings and illustrates some of the ideas in the music from the organ of Jesus College, Cambridge. The wealth of musical styles and musical invention in the collection is notable in itself, but Bach had another motivation for creating this Clavierubung. By unpicking some of its musical codes and symbols, Simon explains its raison d'etre and the meaning of the work's moniker.
