Rana Mitter talks to writer and film-maker Hanif Kureishi as a stage version of his novel The Black Album opens at the National Theatre in London.

The Black Album is the story of an intellectually curious British Pakistani boy and of the tensions and confusions of finding his identity against a backdrop of racial violence, Thatcherite London and the fatwa against Salman Rushdie.
