Elbow's Finest Hour
2008 Mercury Prize-winners Elbow reflect on how the prize and previous winners influenced their music and boosted their career.
6 Music presenter Guy Garvey won the 2008 Mercury Music Prize with his band Elbow. Craig Potter, Pete Turner, Ricahrd Jupp join Guy in his Manchester flat (guitarist Matt Potter was away fishing) to reflect on the impact the Mercury Music Prize has had on their career. The inagural prize in 1992 was awarded to Primal Scream's Screamadelica and was a 'huge' album for the band. In 2000, after losing their record deal, Elbow watched their friend and fellow Mancunian Damon Gough (Badly Drawn Boy) win, which they believe helped to reinvigorate them. They released their debut Asleep in the Back the following year and were nominated, losing to PJ Harvey's Stories of the City, Stories of the Sea (the ceremony was on Sept 11 2001).
More highs and lows followed, but in 2008 Elbow moved from critics favourite to international success with The Seldom Seen Kid, which won the Mercury and just about every other UK Music prize that year. Elbow's finest hour indeed.
