Why is Eigg鈥檚 nickname the Isle of聽the Big Women? Isle of the Big聽Women. According to oral tradition,聽it goes back to the Seventh聽Century. The island was still under聽the control of the Picts. Indeed, it聽was under the control of a Pictish聽queen. She lived in Moidart on the聽mainland.聽Donnan and a dozen companions聽went to Eigg. They were聽Christians. They established a聽monastery. The place is still called聽Kildonnan. Donnan want to turn the聽people of Eigg into Christians.聽But the queen was not pleased.聽She asked the islanders to put the聽monks to death. But the islanders聽were not willing.聽The queen was angry. She sent聽a force of big women warriors to the聽island. She was wanting the warriors聽to put the monks to death.聽When the women warriors聽found the monks, they were taking聽mass. They were in their little聽church. Donnan asked the women聽warriors to let them finish the mass.聽The warriors agreed to that.聽When the mass was finished,聽the monks walked out of the church.聽They were murdered one after the聽other. Their bodies were piled up.聽The bodies were set on fire.聽According to oral tradition, at聽midnight, lights appeared. And聽ghostly voices arose. The women聽warriors were under a spell. They聽followed the lights into a loch. There聽was a secret causeway in the loch.聽The women fell, one after another,聽off the causeway. The water was聽deep. All of the women warriors聽were drowned.聽To the present day, that loch is聽called 鈥渢he loch of the big women鈥.聽And the Isle of Eigg鈥檚 nickname is聽the 鈥渋sle of the big women鈥. That is聽the name the fishermen were using聽when they were at sea.
