Manchester United hosted Aston Villa in what has traditionally been the biggest mismatch in the Premier League. Villa went into the fixture without a league win over United since the opening day of the 1995/96 season. They were ten minutes away from ending that barren run at Old Trafford in April but eventually succumbed to a stoppage-time winner from unheralded teenager Federico Macheda.
Chelsea also defended a long-standing unbeaten record when they took on Everton at Stamford Bridge. Carlo Ancelotti's title challengers went into the match unbeaten in 23 league and cup games against Everton over the last nine years, including a 2-1 win in last season's FA Cup final.
At the other end of the table, Birmingham met West Ham at St Andrew's, while Blackburn made the trip to Hull.
