Lopa Kothari with sounds from around the globe, plus a studio session with Istanbul-born singer Cigdem Aslan, and her take on the Rebetiko songs of the Greek diaspora who settled in and around Smyrna and Istanbul.

Touching a wide spectrum of themes including poverty, crime, violence, drugs, death and exile, Rebetiko music reflects the urban experience of Greeks forced to settle in Turkey following the 1922 population exchange. Shared musical heritages, melodies, lyrics and sentiments converged where local communities integrated with those exiled, and inspired musicians and composers such as Papazoglu, Hatzichrostos, and Skarvelis. Cigdem Aslan draws on this repertoire in her performances.

Istanbul-born Cigdem Aslan, who sings in her native Turkish, as well as Kurdish, Greek, Ladino and an array of Balkan languages, is now established in London studying music at Goldsmith's University and as a vocalist both with the She'Koyokh Klezmer ensemble and the SOAS Rebetiko band. She has performed in Balkan music ensemble Dunav and worked with individuals such as Dimitris Koufogiorgos and folk-rock singer songwriter Boo Scher.
