The Little Letter 251
Creag nam Ban is near Balmoral.聽That鈥檚 in Aberdeenshire. It鈥檚聽beside the River Dee. And it鈥檚聽above Abergeldie Castle. Creag聽nam Ban means 鈥渢he rocky hill of聽the women鈥. People say that聽witches were burned to death聽there. People still remember the聽name of one of the witches 鈥 Kitty聽Rankine.聽Kitty鈥檚 mother had the聽second-sight. Kitty also had the聽second-sight. She got work in the聽castle. She was working for the聽lady [of the house]. The laird 鈥 the聽lady鈥檚 husband 鈥 was away聽overseas.聽One day the lady said to聽Kitty, 鈥淚 hear that you have the聽second-sight. Tell me what my聽husband is doing.鈥澛燢itty got a basin of water.聽She looked in the water. She saw聽the laird sporting with other women聽overseas. She told the lady that.聽The lady was angry. She聽asked Kitty to raise a big storm at聽sea 鈥 where her husband was聽returning on board a ship. But聽Kitty didn鈥檛 have powers like that.聽She only had the second-sight.聽But, as it happened, a storm聽arose by chance. The laird鈥檚 ship聽was at sea. The ship sank. The聽laird was drowned.聽When the lady heard the news聽she was not pleased. She was聽angry. She said that Kitty was a聽witch. She said that Kitty killed her聽husband. Kitty was burned to聽death on Creag nam Ban.聽Creag nam Ban is not聽particularly high. It鈥檚 just a little聽over five hundred metres. But the聽wind that blows at her summit, it鈥檚聽rough and strong 鈥 and noisy.聽Some people say that it鈥檚 not the聽wind that is heard, however. They聽said that is Kitty Rankine鈥檚聽screaming. Her ghost still lives at聽the summit of Creag nam Ban.
