Three-time champions Germany finished third on home soil four years ago and are again among the pre-tournament favourites. Opponents Australia will be looking to at least emulate their achievement in 2006, when they reached the last 16 only to be eliminated by a controversial stoppage-time penalty for Italy.

In the other Group D match, first-time qualifiers Serbia face a youthful Ghana side that surpassed expectation to reach the final of this year's Africa Cup of Nations.
