Strikes in France turn violent as many petrol stations run out of fuel and thousands flee their homes after a typhoon in the Philippines.

The French government prepares to take emergency measures as strikes over pension reforms turn violent and up to two and a half thousand petrol stations run dry following a week of oil refinery blockades.

Details of the government's defence review are revealed showing the flagship of the Royal Navy, the aircraft carrier, Ark Royal, is to be scrapped almost immediately - more than three years before it was due to go out of service.
