Laura Kuenssberg sits in. Shadow Work and Pension Secretary Douglas Alexander talks welfare reform, and Peter Snow discusses his career, Afghanistan, Iraq and the 2010 election.

Laura Kuenssberg sits in for Kate.

Douglas Alexander, Shadow Welfare and Pensions Secretary, opens the programme to discuss reports that the long-term unemployed could be forced into compulsory manual labour.

The ten o'clock interview is with Peter Snow, who talks his career, TV news and ageism – should people "move on" when they get to their 60s? Other topics include the 2010 election result, working with his son, and the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, which he says are not "battles for national survival".

Laura's guests in the 5live forum are Alex Barker of the FT; Sally Bercow, wife of the Speaker, and Labour activist; and James Bartholemew, author of The Welfare State We're In. Their discussion points are the Pride of Britain Awards next week: what makes us proud to be British (or indeed not)? And the coalition is 6 months old this week, but did the events of May change politics forever?
