This year the coalition government will put into practice one of the most radical political ideas in a generation. It hopes that the Big Society will see the withdrawal of the state from many aspects of life beyond Westminster and the encouragement of voluntary organisations, local government and individuals to involve themselves in community care in a totally new way.
