'Hippy' imam
Forty years after following the hippie trail to South Asia, John Butt still lives in the region, and still spreads a message of peace and love - though now as an Islamic scholar.
Forty years ago John Butt did what many people did and went travelling along the hippie trail to South Asia. The difference is he never came back. Now with the middle name of Mohammed, John is a respected Islamic scholar and is the only Westerner to have graduated from Darul-Uloom Deoband, South Asia's largest madrassa, or Islamic school.
He's spent most of the last 40 years living among the Pashtun tribes who roam the lawless borderland between Afghanistan and Pakistan and has even set-up a radio station there. Hear him on the Weekend Mirpuri show.
