Episode 1
Are girls as likely as boys to excel in science? Professor Anne Glover, Chief Scientific Adviser for Scotland, examines the evidence.
1/2
Professor Anne Glover, Chief Scientific Adviser for Scotland, looks at what we are doing to encourage more girls to study science at school and beyond. She examines the image of a scientist and at whether there are fundamental cultural barriers standing between girls and a successful science career, and wonders why, for example, medicine is still more appealing to girls than engineering? Should we simply accept that girls and boys have different talents - or work to make the world of science more appealing to girls? If Scotland can't find the answer to those questions, it will find itself with a skills shortage and no longer be a world leader in science and technology.
