Russell looks in his musical almanac and reads about a date 'rich in associations'. The show includes recordings from Frank Sinatra, Bing Crosby, Bob Dylan and Nat King Cole.
Russell's musical almanac reveals that 24 April is a date 'rich in associations'. We hear Sinatra's famous 1946 version of You Are Too Beautiful, recorded on this day. The collaboration of Cleo Laine and John Williams is remembered to salute the latter on his 70th birthday, while the 75th anniversary of the International Bing Crosby Society prompts a Crosby classic from 1936.
A memory of the late Robert Tear gives us Home! Sweet Home! and newly received albums provide choice Anita O'Day and Dinah Washington tracks. Bob Dylan made his recording debut 50 years ago on this day and Russell chooses a Harry Belafonte track on which Bob played harmonica. This in turn leads to 'Harmonica Harry' by Ted Weems' band.
Al Hibbler, who died 10 years ago today, is recalled in a collaboration with altoist Johnny Hodges and the show concludes with two April songs, one from Marlene VerPlanck, who recently toured UK; the other by Nat King Cole and George Shearing.
