This week, Johnnie is joined by legendary guitarist, singer and songwriter Robbie Robertson, and the pair revisit the genius of 70s rock.
Robertson is best known as the main songwriter and guitarist with The Band from 1964 to 1976. The Band formed in 1968 after the members acted as the backing band for several frontmen including Bob Dylan. Their highly acclaimed debut album, Music from the Big Pink, and self-titled second album are two of the most lauded albums of the 60s.
They went on to release five albums during the 70s and, after becoming weary of touring, gave a huge retirement concert in 1976 that was caught on film by director Martin Scorsese in the now classic feature documentary film The Last Waltz.
Following his departure from The Band, Robertson produced Neil Diamond's 1976 studio album Beautiful Noise and 1977 live album Love at the Greek. He then became one of the first rock musicians to begin working in scoring for film, and went on to contribute in some capacity to the soundtracks to many of Scorsese's films including Raging Bull, The King of Comedy, The Colour of Money, Casino, Gangs of New York, The Departed and Shutter Island.
Robertson's solo music career started in 1987 with the release of his self-titled debut album and followed with a further four albums, the latest being How to Become Clairvoyant. He talks to Johnnie about those heady 70s days, how the band became The Band, and relives that heady San Francisco evening in 1976 that was captured in The Last Waltz.
Also on the show, a listener digs out their platform shoes or ripped punk T-shirt to remember what the decade meant to them in My 70s, and Johnnie spins three gems from a classic 70s album.
