Paul Gambaccini blends this week's US hits from the digital songs, albums, country, R 'n' B and rock charts with LP and singles classics from the last six decades.

Paul Gambaccini presents tracks from this week's US charts and hits from the last six decades. In the feature Baby What a Big Surprise [they really were Number One albums], we hear the title track from Calcutta! by television host Lawrence Welk and a track from Come Away with Me - the 2003 debut LP by Norah Jones and the first number one album for Blue Note Records since its foundation in 1939.

Songs will be heard from the debut hit LPs by Dion and Stevie Nicks in the regular feature The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face. It's Not the Same Old Song highlights the title track of Bruce Springsteen's Number One album The River and a country number by Garth Brooks also called The River.

In A Matter of Life and Death, Paul celebrates the birth in 1983 of Michelle Branch. He also pays tribute to the recently deceased member of The Coasters, Carl Gardner. We also hear The Twist by Chubby Checker and The Very Thought of You by Ray Noble and His Orchestra, with vocalist Al Bowlly, in the weekly presentation of two songs from the Grammy Hall of Fame Singles.

There are past and present R 'n' B Number Ones from Aretha Franklin and Jill Scott, past and present country Number Ones from Donna Fargo and Jason Aldean, and rock Number Ones from 1981 and now by the Moody Blues and Foster the People. Eminem scores another number one album with Hell: The Sequel (EP), his collaboration with Royce Da 5'9" under the name Bad Meets Evil. Katy Perry adds another number one single to her total with Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F).
