The US credit rating goes from AAA to AA+, violence in Syria is getting worse, a British student is killed by a polar bear in Norway, and tributes to Paul Scholes as he retires.

As we go on air, reports come through from America that the country's credit status is being downgraded for the first time in history. We speak to our correspondents in Washington, economic analysts, and Motoko Rich from the New York Times who says it's just the latest twist in a massive story.
The killing of a British student by a Polar bear made many of the front pages of the papers. We speak to Jim McNeil, an artic explorer. He says there's no way to stop Polar bears - they'll just do exactly what they want.
Anti-government protests continue in Syria. Patrick Seale, a writer and journalist, tells us about the sectarian roots of the crisis, and says Syrians are very wary of military intervention by other countries.
And the world football phone in features Smiths references and how they could be applied to players, Brazilian shirt names and tributes to the career of Paul Scholes, whose testimonial has taken place at Old Trafford. One caller said Scholes made a few brilliant tackles, but messed up a few thousand more.
