An Litir Bheag 326

Seo st貌iridh traidiseanta 鈥 鈥淎n Damh agus an t-Asal鈥. Bha damh agus asal a鈥 fuireach air an aon tuathanas. Bha saoghal bochd aig an damh. Bha e ag obair a h-uile latha o mhoch gu dubh. Ach bha saoghal math aig an asal. Cha robh esan a鈥 d猫anamh obair sam bith. Bha e d矛reach a鈥 gabhail fois.

Latha a bha seo, thuirt an damh ris an asal, 鈥淭ha mi sg矛th de bhith ag obair fad na h-霉ine.鈥

鈥淭ha cus agad ri dh猫anamh,鈥 dh鈥檃ontaich an t-asal. 鈥淏idh thu a鈥 treabhadh, a鈥 cliathadh is a鈥 falbh le cairt. Innsidh mi dhut d猫 n矛 thu. Leig ort nach eil thu gu math. Cha bhi obair sam bith agad an uair sin.鈥

An ath mhadainn, leig an damh air gun robh e tinn. Nuair a nochd an tuathanach, th貌isich an damh air gearan. L脿igh e s矛os mar gun robh e tinn.

鈥淔eumaidh nach eil an damh gu math an-diugh,鈥 thuirt an tuathanach ris fh猫in, 鈥淟eigidh mi leis fois a ghabhail an-diugh. N矛 an t-asal an obair.鈥

Bha an t-asal a鈥 treabhadh fad an latha. Bha an damh a鈥 gabhail fois anns an st脿ball. Mus t脿inig beul na h-oidhche, bha an t-asal claoidhte le sg矛ths. Bha e m矛-thoilichte. Cha robh e ag iarraidh latha eile mar sin.

Nuair a thill an t-asal don st脿ball, chaidh e far an robh an damh. Thuirt e ris an damh, 鈥淭ha thu fortanach, 鈥檌lle. Tha cluasan biorach ormsa. Chuala mi an tuathanach a鈥 bruidhinn ri a bhean mu do dheidhinn.鈥

鈥淒猫 thuirt e?鈥 dh鈥檉haighnich an damh.

鈥淕u bheil thu gun fheum nuair a tha thu tinn,鈥 fhreagair an t-asal. 鈥淢ura f脿s thu nas fhe脿rr gu luath, cuiridh e 脿s dhut.鈥

Chuir seo eagal air an damh. Thug e taing mh貌r don asal. An ath mhadainn, nuair a nochd an tuathanach, bha an damh air a chasan gu sgiobalta. Chaidh e mach a dh鈥檕bair gun ghearan sam bith.

Rinn an t-asal g脿ire bheag dha fh猫in. Bha e a鈥 gabhail fois anns an st脿ball. Bha an damh air ais ag obair. 鈥淔eumaidh cuid de chreutairean a bhith ag obair gu cruaidh,鈥 thuirt e ris fh猫in, 鈥渁gus sin mar a tha!鈥

The Little Letter 326

Here is a traditional story 鈥 鈥淭he Ox and the Donkey鈥. An ox and a donkey were living on the same farm. The ox had a poor life. He was working every day from dawn to dusk. But the donkey had a good life. He didn鈥檛 do any work. He just rested.

聽聽聽聽聽聽聽 One day, the ox said to the donkey, 鈥淚鈥檓 fed up of working all the time.鈥

聽聽聽聽聽聽聽 鈥淵ou do too much,鈥 the donkey agreed. 鈥淵ou plough, you harrow and you pull a cart. I鈥檒l tell you what to do. Pretend you鈥檙e not well. Then you won鈥檛 have any work.鈥

聽聽聽聽聽聽聽 Next morning, the ox pretended he was sick. When the farmer appeared, the ox started to complain. He lay down as if he were sick.

聽聽聽聽聽聽聽 鈥淭he ox can鈥檛 be well today,鈥 the farmer said to himself. 鈥淚鈥檒l let him rest today. The donkey will do the work.鈥

聽聽聽聽聽聽聽 The donkey was ploughing all day long. The ox was resting in the stable. Before nightfall, the donkey was utterly exhausted. He was unhappy. He didn鈥檛 want another day like that.

聽聽聽聽聽聽聽 When the donkey returned to the stable, he went up to the ox. He said to the ox, 鈥淵ou鈥檙e lucky, lad. I have sharp ears. I heard the farmer speaking to his wife about you.鈥

聽聽聽聽聽聽聽 鈥淲hat did he say?鈥 the ox asked.

聽聽聽聽聽聽聽 鈥淭hat you鈥檙e useless when you鈥檙e sick,鈥 replied the donkey. 鈥淚f you don鈥檛 get well quickly, he鈥檒l kill you.鈥

聽聽聽聽聽聽聽 This frightened the ox. He thanked the donkey profusely. Next morning, when the farmer appeared, the ox was on his feet quickly. He went out to work without a complaint.

聽聽聽聽聽聽聽 The donkey smiled to himself. He was resting in the stable. The ox was back working. 鈥淪ome creatures have to work hard,鈥 he said to himself, 鈥渁nd that鈥檚 how it is!鈥
