Can the Can: Johnnie Chats to Suzi Quatro
Johnnie catches up with Suzi Quatro - one of the first women of rock 'n' roll - as she releases a brand new studio album and reflects on a decade filled with hits and Happy Days.
Johnnie catches up with Suzi Quatro - one of the first women of rock & roll - as she releases a brand new studio album, In The Spotlight.
Suzi was an icon of the 70s, one of the first women to really rock. She moved to the UK in 1971 from her native Michigan on the invitation of producer Mickie Most and went on to take up residency in the UK charts from 1973-1979, for no less than 101 weeks. Her hits include Can The Can and Devil Gate Drive and her influence can be seen in the work of female rockers from Chrissie Hynde to Joan Jett and The Runaways.
Appearing on the front cover on Rolling Stone in 1975 with the tagline "Suzi Quatro flexes her leather", she was known not only for her ability to hold her own amongst the glam rockers, but also for her appearance in Happy Days as Leather Tuscadero, not to mention her enviable figure. Still performing 100 shows a year across the world, whilst approaching her 50th year in the industry, she jokes; "when I turn my back on the audience and shake my ass, and there is silence... I'll stop!"
Also on the show, a listener recalls their favourite musical memories in My 70s and Johnnie spins three tracks from Van Morrison's third solo album, which was released right in February 1970: Moondance.
