Acclaimed guitarist and songwriter Martin Simpson talks about his highly anticipated new album, Purpose and Grace, on this week's Mike Harding Show.

Since arriving on the British folk scene in the 1970s, Lincolnshire-born Martin has earned an international reputation as one of the acoustic world's finest guitarists. His seamless combinations of traditional material from various British and American cultures, alongside gripping and emotional songs of his own, have won him no less than 23 nominations and six prizes at the 大象传媒 Radio 2 Folk Awards.

Purpose and Grace is Martin's latest album of many for the folk label Topic Records. It features a host of musical friends including Bellowhead's Jon Boden, Scottish folk legend Dick Gaughan and another guitar hero, Richard Thompson. June Tabor, with whom Martin made a number of classic recordings in the 1970s, also guests on the album.

Mike caught up with Martin backstage at the 2011 Cambridge Folk Festival to find out how the album took shape.
