Do you need to choose your words more carefully?
The press reported this week that we should avoid using the expression "the poor" because it can stigmatise those living in poverty, and make us guilty of "povertyism". Mental health campaigners have called the use of terms such as "OCD" and "schizophrenic" as a form of abuse. And only last weekend TV presenter Eammon Holmes caused a bit of a stink by calling a co-presenter a "retard". So, do we need to be a lot more careful about what we say and how we say it, or do we need to lighten up about language?
