Mark Stephen explores the islands of Skye and Raasay through the poetry of Sorley MacLean to mark 100 years since his birth.
Sorley MacLean is widely considered to be the finest Gaelic poet who ever lived. This October marks 100 years since he was born on the island of Raasay, which lies between Skye and Applecross on mainland Scotland. In a special edition of Out of Doors, Mark Stephen explores the landscape of Skye and Raasay through the poetry of Sorley MacLean, from the tops of the Cuillin to the abandoned village of Hallaig, which was the focus of his most famous poems of the same name. We enter a world of Gaelic mythology, symbolism, song and untamed landscape which MacLean describes within the wider context of the political backdrop of the 20th Century.
