Thousands of people have given money to artist and democracy campaigner Ai Weiwei to help him pay a tax bill of 2.4 million dollars which the Chinese government says he owes them. Many have thrown cash over the wall of the compound in Beijing where he lives and works. The artist was detained for three months by the authorities earlier this year, but was freed in June. Ai Weiwei told Rhod about the last few days from his studio in Beijing.
