Breezin' with George Benson

One of America's greatest jazz guitarists George Benson remembers the 1970s and Johnnie plays some classic Peel Sessions from the decade.

Johnnie Walker celebrates the music of a colourful and eclectic decade, with some memories from George Benson and some classic Peel Session tracks.

From Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, George is a jazz guitarist recognized as one of the greatest in the history of the genre. Over a career spanning five decades and thirty recordings as band leader, he has exhibited his proficiency in jazz, soul, funk and pop, and also showed himself to be a versatile and soulful singer.

Whilst Benson was already well known in jazz circles as the 70s began, it was his tenor voice that saw him rise to greater fame in 1976 with the release of Breezin'. The album went triple platinum and won multiple prizes at that year's Grammy Awards.

Also on the show, Johnnie plays some classic recordings from the featured album Movement: 大象传媒 Radio 1 Peel Sessions 1977-1979. John Peel's show for Radio 1 was unmissable for lovers of new music, and the sessions he recorded with artists including The Jam, Buzzcocks and Joy Division have gone down in history as some of the finest recordings the bands made. Many of the tracks are being released on CD for the very first time.
