Paul Gambaccini presents tracks from this week's US charts and hits from the last six decades.
In the feature Headline News [Number One Albums On Noteworthy Days], we hear the title track of the Eagles' LP The Long Run. It was number one on 4 November 1979 - the day on which the American Embassy in Iran was seized. It was the beginning of a 444-day crisis. We also hear Somewhere by Barbra Streisand from The Broadway Album. It was number one in the US on 20 January 1986 when Martin Luther King Day was first observed.
In the regular feature The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face, songs are featured from LPs by The Association and Bruce Hornsby & The Range. It's Not The Same Old Song highlights Everywhere by Fleetwood Mac and a different song with the same title by Michelle Branch.
In A Matter Of Life And Death Paul celebrates the birth on this date in 1971 of Anthony Hamilton with his hit Charlene. We also hear More, More, More by Andrea True Connection - played as a tribute to the recently deceased singer Andrea Truden. When You Wish Upon A Star by Cliff Edwards and Where Did Our Love Go by the Supremes are this week's featured songs from the Grammy Hall Of Fame Singles list.
Our R&B Number Ones are from 2006 - Be Without You by Mary J. Blige - and this week - Stay by Tyrese. We hear Country Number Ones from 1958 and now by Johnny Cash and Toby Keith. This week's past and present Rock Number Ones are by Def Leppard and The Black Keys.
Adele remains at the top of the US album chart for a sixteenth non-consecutive week with 21. And, on the singles side, Adele scores her third number one from the album with Set Fire To The Rain.
