Chesterfield to Eyam
John Sergeant travels to Derbyshire and to Francis Frith's home town of Chesterfield, where he ascends the twisted spire and visits a medieval country house.
Using early Victorian photos as his guide, John Sergeant is on a journey around Britain following in the footsteps of pioneer photographer Francis Frith and his team as well as taking his own pictures. Now all but forgotten, Frith was celebrated in his day for his attempts to document every city, every town and every village in the country. The results of his and his team's work have left us with an extraordinary record of life in the 19th century.
This time John travels to Derbyshire and to Frith's home town of Chesterfield, where he ascends the famous twisted spire, visits a medieval country house outside Bakewell that became a time capsule for nearly 200 years, and finally heads off to Nottingham to have a flutter at the races.
