Mariinsky, Gergiev - Verdi Requiem

Presented by Petroc Trelawny, from the Barbican in London. Valery Gergiev conducts the Mariinsky Orchestra, Chorus and soloists from St Petersburg soloists in Verdi's Requiem.

Live from the Barbican in London

Presented by Petroc Trelawny

Valery Gergiev conducts the Mariinsky Orchestra, Chorus and soloists from St.Petersburg soloists in Verdi's Requiem - one of the most popular choral works in the whole repertoire.

Written in memory of the great Italian poet, novelist and national hero Alessandro Manzoni, and first performed in 1874, Verdi's Requiem is his only large-scale work not intended for the stage. Despite this, it is unashamedly theatrical in style with sections of drama contrasted with moments of great tenderness.
