The society was set up in 1889 to help performers and entertainers who had fallen on hard times and over the years has featured a Who's Who of comic royalty.
This week's Zone features archive and interviews with many of the most illustrious members including Ken Dodd, Nicholas Parsons, Barry Cryer, Bruce Forsyth and Paul Daniels.
