Are you surprised that second and third generation British Asians are still marrying their cousins? Plus the week's guru is fitness expert Kapil Lakhani.
1pm- Are you surprised that second and third generation British Asians are still marrying their cousins?
A research project called "Born in Bradford" has found that the custom of cousin marriages has become more entrenched in British Pakistanis living in the city, even if they are second or third generation. The research finds that people who were born and who grew up here are MORE likely to end up in such a relationship than their parents and grandparents.
Does that shock you?
Why does this matter? Its proved that cousin marriage increases the risk of genetic defects. Babies born in Bradford are three times as likelty to have problems as those born across the general populations. So is it time we ended tis practice? Is it important that young British born Asians uphold this cultural tradition? Or are you putting your unborn child's life at risk by marrying a relative? Call Nihal and tell him what you think.
