A 78 year old from East Sussex is due to become the oldest person to have a sex change operation on the NHS in the UK next year. She will have celebrated her 80th birthday before the operation takes place. Ruth Rose has spent most of her life known as James Rose who was an RAF navigator, had a successful career as an engineer, was married and has 3 grown-up children and 4 grandchildren. Ruth Rose has been living as a woman for around 6 years now, and in March she started taking oestrogen in the first step before having gender reassignment surgery next year. There were 154 sex changes carried out by the NHS in England in 2009 - and the average cost starts at 拢10,000.
MP's publish their report into phone hacking at the News of the World. The Culture Select Committee has been investigating whether Parliament was misled about the extent of the practice at the newspaper.
