Portraits Day - Petroc Trelawny

Portraits Day: With Petroc Trelawny. Mozart: Piano Sonata in C, K309 (2nd mvt). Ellington: Portrait of Louis Armstrong. Rossini: William Tell Overture. Jerome Kern: Mark Twain.

Portraits Day

In a special day of performance and debate, Radio 3 celebrates centuries of music that have painted pictures of personalities. From Breakfast to Jazz on 3, each piece reflects a person in music, creating an extensive musical gallery. Greta Garbo, Nelson Mandela, Marie Antoinette and Louis Armstrong will all have a place, alongside other famous and unknown figures.

All day presenters will be exploring the questions: who were the people behind the music, why did they inspire composers, and how are they captured in sound? Alongside musical repertoire, they will be joined by guests for debates on why portraiture is such a driving force in so many art forms; including painting, photography, poetry, sculpture and music. The composer Jonathan Dove will write a new musical portrait for later in the year as a 大象传媒 commission, and he will be joining the debate. Writers Aminatta Forna, Daljit Nagra, Louise Welsh, Osi Rhys Osmond and Paul Farley will feature throughout the day, with their descriptions of visual portraits which are significant to them.
