Time to put on the Demis Roussos LP, get the Beaujolais out and munch on cheese-and-pineapple sticks as Johnnie celebrates the revival of classic 70s play, Abigail's Party.
Time to put on the Demis Roussos LP, get the Beaujolais out of the fridge and munch on cheese and pineapple on sticks as Johnnie Walker celebrates the revival of Mike Leigh's classic 70's play, 'Abigail's Party'.
As Jill Halfpenny dons a long floaty dress and proffers booze and barbs like Alison Steadman before her as the monstrous Beverly, she joins Johnnie Walker to talk about 'Abigail's Party'.
As the new staging of Mike Leigh's famous 1970's stage play and televised adaptation comes to the West End, Johnnie talks to Jill about why this awkward comedy of suburban manners struck such a nerve.
Also on the show Johnnie marks 40 years since The Great Western Express Festival. Held in Bardney, Lincolnshire in late May 1972, the festival featured an impressive line-up, including The Faces, Genesis, Status Quo, Wishbone Ash, Slade, Monty Python's Flying Circus and an early Roxy Music. This was no Isle of Wight Festival however, plagued by terrible weather and local opposition, the organisers ended up losing a lot of money. Johnnie Walker hears tales of mud bowls, foam parties and court injunctions and spins tracks from those who entertained.
