Live from Bath Abbey, Martin Handley introduces a concert of supersize choral music from the Renaissance and early Baroque.

Thought lost for 400 years, Alessandro Striggio's Mass in 40 Parts is believed to have been the inspiration for Thomas Tallis's great motet Spem in Alium. Involving five groups of voices and instruments placed around the Abbey, textures from 40 individual parts are woven into an all-enveloping soundscape before rising spectacularly into 60 parts for a grand finale. Plus, to mark the 400th anniversary of the death of Giovanni Gabrieli there's a new reconstruction of his mighty Magnificat.
