Litir 676: Na Ridirean Teampallach - P脿irt 2

Bha mi a鈥 bruidhinn mu na Ridirean Teampallach agus mar a dh鈥櫭╥rich an smuain gun robh iad an l脿thair aig Bl脿r Allt a鈥 Bhonnaich, a鈥 toirt taic do dh鈥檃rmailt na h-Alba. Ann an tr矛 cheud deug 鈥檚 a seachd (1307), bha iad air an d猫anamh m矛-laghail. Chaidh na rudan a bhuineadh dhaibh 鈥 togalaichean, fearann, ionmhas 鈥 a chur an gr猫im.

听听听听听听听听听听听 D猫 thachair do na ridirean fh猫in, ge-t脿? Uill, a r猫ir choltais, bha iad air an cur an gr猫im, no dh鈥檃tharraich iad an ainmean is theich iad, no thug iad ballrachd a-mach ann am buidhnean ridireachd eile, no theich iad gu d霉thchannan a bha taobh a-muigh smachd a鈥 Ph脿pa. Bha Alba am measg nan d霉thchannan sin. Bha am P脿p air R矛gh na h-Alba 鈥 Raibeart Brus 鈥 ascaointeachadh 脿s d猫idh gun do mhuirt e an Cuimeanach Ruadh ann an eaglais ann an D霉n Phris bliadhna roimhe. A r猫ir an st貌iridh, chaidh m貌ran Ridirean Teampallach 脿 d霉thchannan eile gu ruige Alba, far an robh iad s脿bhailte.

听听听听听听听听听听听 Bha na Ridirean Teampallach air a bhith ann an Alba roimhe sin agus tha iad co-cheangailte ri seann ainm-脿ite G脿idhlig ann an Lodainn. Fhuair iad cead bho R矛gh Daibhidh I ionad a chur air chois deas air D霉n 脠ideann. 鈥橲 e Temple an t-ainm a th鈥 air an 脿ite an-diugh. Ach chan e sin an t-ainm a bh鈥 air anns a鈥 cheathramh linn deug. Bha ainm G脿idhlig air an uair sin 鈥 Baltrodoc 鈥 no Baile nan Trodach 鈥渟ettlement of the warriors鈥, a r猫ir Uilleim MhicBh脿tair. C貌 bh鈥 anns na 鈥渢rodaich鈥 sin ach na Ridirean Teampallach.

听听听听听听听听听听听 Tha d脿 abhainn air a bheil 鈥淯isge Easg鈥 mar ainm faisg air a ch猫ile ann am meadhan Lodainn, deas air D霉n 脠ideann. Tha Teampall 鈥 no Baile nan Trodach 鈥 faisg air an Easg Dheas. Agus, air bruaichean Easg Thuath, tha 脿ite ann a tha m貌ran nas ainmeile 鈥 Ros Linn. Tha an caibeal sin ainmeil air feadh an t-saoghail, 脿s d猫idh gun do nochd e anns an leabhar aig Dan Brown, The Da Vinci Code. Tha m貌ran ag r脿dh gu bheil ceangal eadar Caibeal Ros Linne agus na Ridirean Teampallach, ach 鈥檚 iomadh sgoilear a tha ag 脿icheadh sin gu l脿idir.

听听听听听听听听听听听 Chan ann an Lodainn a-mh脿in a bha fearann aig na Ridirean Teampallach ann an Alba. Bha fearann m貌r aca ann am Moireibh, agus 脿iteachan eile cuideachd.

听听听听听听听听听听听 Tha cuid dhen bheachd, leis nach robh Alba fo smachd spioradail a鈥 Ph脿pa 脿s d猫idh an ascaointeachaidh, gun deach ridirean 脿s an Fhraing agus d霉thchannan eile gu ruige Alba. Bha na Ridirean Teampallach cumhachdach ann an Alba an uair sin. Agus, leis gun d鈥 fhuair iad t猫armann ann an Alba, thug iad taic do dh鈥檃rmailt a鈥 Bhrusaich aig Bl脿r Allt a鈥 Bhonnaich.

听听听听听听听听听听听 Ge-t脿, cha robh am Brusach airson sin fhoillseachadh oir bha e an d貌chas gum biodh am P脿p de貌nach cur 脿s don ascaointeachadh. Mar sin, chaidh a chumail d矛omhair gun robh na Ridirean Teampallach ann aig Bl脿r Allt a鈥 Bhonnaich.

听听听听听听听听听听听 Uill, 鈥檚 e sin an st貌iridh. Tha m貌ran de luchd-eachdraidh ag r脿dh nach eil fianais sgr矛obhte sam bith ann a tha a鈥 toirt taic dha. Ach chan eil sin a鈥 cur stad air feadhainn bho bhith ga chreidsinn. Agus c貌 tha ag r脿dh nach d猫anadh e deagh leabhar no film?!

Puing-ch脿nain na Litreach

Baile nan Trodach: while this might today appear to mean 鈥渟ettlement of the quarrelsome people鈥, trod has an older meaning than 鈥渜uarrel, scold鈥 鈥 ie 鈥渇ighting, combat鈥. Thus Baile nan Trodach was 鈥減lace of the warriors鈥. This nuance of the word is obsolete in modern Scottish (and Manx) Gaelic but still exists in Irish, where 迟谤辞诲补铆 has the principal meaning of 鈥渇ighter, combatant鈥 and a secondary meaning of 鈥渜uarrelsome person鈥. Watson writes, in his seminal work, 鈥淭he Celtic Place-names of Scotland鈥: .. 鈥渢here can be little or no doubt that the name was given with reference to the Knights [Templar], who fought for the Holy Sepulchre in the Crusades 鈥 a valuable indication of Gaelic activity in Lothian about the middle of the twelfth century鈥. The place-names Temple and Ballentrodoch appear to have co-existed until the eighteenth century, when the Gaelic name finally fell into disuse.

Gn脿thas-cainnt na Litreach

鈥橲 iomadh sgoilear a tha ag 脿icheadh sin: many a scholar denies that.
