Litir 678: Tannochbrae agus 脌iteachan 鈥淎lbannach鈥 eile - P脿irt 2

An t-seachdain sa chaidh bha mi a鈥 bruidhinn mu Tannochbrae, Balamory agus Glendarroch 鈥 tr矛 脿iteachan ficseanail air pr貌graman telebhisein Albannach. Tha na h-ainmean uile G脿idhlig no leth-Gh脿idhlig. Tha Balamory a鈥 riochdachadh Baile Mhoire (st猫idhichte air Tobermory no Tobar Mhoire ann am Muile).

听听听听听听听听听听听 Nuair a bhios mi a鈥 ruith l脿ithean G脿idhlig do dh鈥橝lbannaich aig nach eil an c脿nan idir, tha iad uile mothachail gur e ainm 鈥渇矛or Albannach鈥 a th鈥 ann am Balamory. Ach chan eil fhios aca, mar as trice, gur e ainm G脿idhlig a th鈥 ann no d猫 tha e a鈥 ciallachadh 鈥 am baile aig Moire.

听听听听听听听听听听听 Nam biodh -mory no -Moire no -Mhoire ann an ainm-脿ite, d猫 a鈥 chiad eileamaid ris am biodh d霉il? Cill(e), nach e? 脌ite co-cheangailte ris an Eaglais. Agus tha m貌ran dhiubhsan ann 鈥 Kilmory (cuideachd Kilmuir) no Cille Mhoire. Tha iad pailt air taobh an iar na d霉thcha, eadar An t-Eilean Sgitheanach agus Siorrachd 脌ir. Tha a鈥 chuid as motha aca ann an Earra-Gh脿idheal.

听听听听听听听听听听听 Bha Glendarroch anns a鈥 phr貌gram Take the High Road. Bha am filmeadh air a dh猫anamh ann an Lus, taobh Loch Laomainn. Chruthaich iad ainm G脿idhlig airson a鈥 bhaile. Tha Glendarroch a鈥 tighinn bho Gleann Darach 鈥済len of oaks鈥. Mar a thuirt mi an t-seachdain sa chaidh, tha 脿ite ann an Earra-Gh脿idheal leis an dearbh ainm.

听听听听听听听听听听听 Cha tuirt mi c脿il thuige seo air d脿 phr貌gram eile air an telebhisean 鈥 Hamish MacBeth agus Monarch of the Glen. Uill, 鈥檚 ann an Lochdubh a bha Hamish MacBeth st猫idhichte 鈥 deagh ainm G脿idhlig a tha sin. Agus chruthaich Compton MacCoinnich 脿ite macmeanmnach air an robh Glenbogle airson a nobhail Monarch of the Glen. Chanainn gu bheil e G脿idhlig, ach chan eil fhios a鈥檓 d猫 tha e a鈥 ciallachadh 鈥 Gleann na Boglaich 鈥檚 d貌cha?!

听听听听听听听听听听听 鈥橲 e an teachdaireachd, ma-th脿 鈥 a鈥 coimhead thairis air na pr貌gramanan gu l猫ir 鈥 ma tha sibh airson ainm baile a chruthachadh a tha aithnichte don mh貌r-shluagh mar 鈥淎lbannach鈥, d猫anaibh cinnteach gu bheil e st猫idhichte air dualchas na G脿idhlig!

听听听听听听听听听听听 Ma tha sin f矛or airson bailtean beaga d霉thchail, a bheil e cuideachd f矛or anns na bailtean m貌ra? Chaidh ainm a chruthachadh airson River City air a鈥 BhBC. Ged a tha am filmeadh air a dh猫anamh ann an D霉n Breatann, tha an st貌iridh st猫idhichte ann an Glaschu. Agus chruthaich iad ainm sg矛re 鈥 Shieldinch. Chanainn gu bheil a鈥 chiad ph脿irt bhon t-seann Bheurla, a鈥 ciallachadh 鈥渂othain aig iasgairean鈥. Agus an d脿rna eileamaid 鈥 uill, G脿idhlig no Breatannais 鈥 innis no ynys, a鈥 ciallachadh 鈥渞iverine meadow鈥.

听听听听听听听听听听听 Mus fh脿g mi an cuspair seo, feumaidh mi rudeigin a r脿dh mu charactaran cart霉in air a bheil m貌ran Albannach cianail toigheach. 鈥橲 iad sin na Broons agus Oor Wullie. Airson iomadach bliadhna cha deach innse d猫 am baile anns an robh iad a鈥 fuireach. Anns na naochadan, ge-t脿, th脿inig e a-mach 鈥 Auchenshoogle. Ainm dha-r矛reabh Albannach 鈥 agus ainm G脿idhlig 鈥 Achadh an t-Seagailfield of the rye.

听听听听听听听听听听听 Sin Tannochbrae, Balamory, Glendarroch, Lochdubh, Glenbogle, Shieldinch agus Auchenshoogle. Shaoileadh sibh, nach ann air bailtean macmeanmnach a bha mi a鈥 bruidhinn, ach uisge-beatha!

Puing-ch脿nain na Litreach

鈥檚 ann an Lochdubh a bha Hamish MacBeth 蝉迟猫颈诲丑颈肠丑迟别: it鈥檚 in Lochdubh that Hamish MacBeth was based. Most Scots, whether or not they speak Gaelic, happily pronounce the letter combination dubh as 鈥渄oo鈥, without sounding the terminal 鈥渂h鈥 (much as they happily leave letters silent in English words like knight, phlegm, dehisce and debt). But I wonder how many of them realise that the 鈥渂h鈥 was pronounced at one time. In the far south of Ireland, Gaelic-speakers still pronounce it (approximately) 鈥渄oov鈥; they have retained the historical sounding of the 鈥渂h鈥. That must be how we said it also at one time, hence the spelling; from the old dubh we get the surname MacDuff, with terminal 鈥渇鈥. The river Deveron in north-east Scotland derives its name from 诲耻产丑-脠颈谤别补苍苍 鈥渂lack Ireland鈥 (note the preservation of the 鈥渧鈥 sound). If we went back even further, we鈥檇 find the word written (and presumably pronounced) dub. A similar evolution took place in Welsh from Old Welsh dub to modern Welsh du.

Gn脿thas-cainnt na Litreach

d猫 a鈥 chiad eileamaid ris am biodh d霉il?: what is the first element that would be expected?
