Eating with your hands

Dil Neiyyar sits in for Nihal, asking whether you would eat with your hands in public. Plus he speaks to author Alom Shaha about his new book, The Young Atheist's Handbook.

Would you eat with your hands in public?

Oprah Winfrey has just visited India for the first time and the programme on her visit was broadcast at the weekend. It didn't go well. She was accused of being insensitive over many things. But what's really got people going is her surprise that people in India still eat with their hands. She made some comments while visiting a well to do family and she's been accused of humiliating her hosts as well as well as disrespecting India and its customs.

But what do you think about this? Is the criticism a bit harsh? Is there ever any excuse to eat with your hands now knives, forks and spoons are freely available? Would you eat food with your hands in public? Or do you think those that criticise the practice are at best ignorant or at worst racist?

Do you eat with your hands? At home? In restaurants? Have you eaten Indian food for lunch at your desk in the office? Has anyone ever criticized you for doing it? How did you react?

And later in the programme Dil speaks to author Alom Shaha about his new book 'The Young Atheist's Handbook.'.
