Is there any place for Sharia law in the UK?

The Appeal Court has said that a prominent Muslim should pay maintenance to his ex wife He had claimed that Sharia law said he doesn't have to. The judge disagreed. He said using the argument that the payments were "illegitimate or illegal according to Islamic culture" was no defence in English law. What are your thoughts on this?
