The spokeswoman for the United Nations' observer mission in Syria shares her fears for the safety of civilians as footage emerges of rebels shooting dead prisoners in Aleppo. Sausan Ghosheh says government forces are now using fighter jets on the city. She also tells us how her convoy came under attack at a military checkpoint in an area held by the opposition as they tried to reach Homs.

Ahead of Vladimir Putin's visit to London, and informal talks with David Cameron, James Nixey from Chatham House examines the state of the relationship between the UK and Russia. With difficult subjects such as Syria and the poisoning of Alexander Litvinenko likely to be raised, Mr Nixey suggests perhaps it's time for the British and Russian governments to rock the 'diplomatic boat' and confront the big issues.

Up All Night pays its respects to the American literary giant Gore Vidal, who's died at the age of 86. His official biographer Fred Kaplan tells us he was a 'complicated man, a great narcissist'. He also describes how because of this, he hesitated about writing his biography as he was worried he wouldn't be given a free reign. Joining Mr Kaplan, the former Sunday Times editor Sir Harold Evans, who was Vidal's publisher for 7 years. He talks to us with great affection about his friend, whom he describes as a 'wounded genius' with a command for language matched by no one else.
