The German company that produced the drug thalidomide has apologised for the first time for the serious birth defects it caused. Ellie Simmonds to compete at the Paralympics.

* The pharmaceutical company which produced Thalidomide has issued its first apology to the thousands of people left disabled by the drug. The Chief Executive of Grunenthal, Harald Stock said his firm regretted the effects of the morning sickness tablet and was sorry for the company's long silence.

* Firefighters in Spain say the huge wildfire raging near the resort of Marbella on the Costa del Sol is now largely under control. At least one person has died in the fires and thousands of homes and hotels were evacuated.

* Ellie Simmonds and Oscar Pistorius are the big names appearing on day 3 of the London Paralympics.
