Litir 685: Coinneach Odhar Fiosaiche - P脿irt 3
Bha mi ag innse dhuibh mar a fhuair Coinneach Odhar Fiosaiche an d脿-shealladh. A r猫ir beul-aithris, bha clach aige, le toll innte. Nuair a bheireadh e s霉il tron toll, chitheadh e sealladh. Ach d猫 thachair don chloich sin an d猫idh b脿s Choinnich? A bheil i ann fhathast? Seo na thachair dhi, a r猫ir beul-aithris.
听听听听听听听听听听听 Bha cruinneachadh m貌r de dh鈥檜aislean ann an Caisteal Bhrathainn. Bha an t-uabhas de chloinn ann. Chuala Coinneach cuideigin ag r脿dh nach ann tric a chite uiread de chloinn uasal c貌mhla anns an aon 脿ite.
听听听听听听听听听听听 Cha robh Coinneach cho measail air uaisleachd. Thuirt e seo: Is motha a th鈥 ann do chlann ghillean-b霉ird agus do chlann ghillean-st脿baill na th鈥 ann do chlann dhaoin鈥 uaisle. Cha b鈥 fhada gus an cuala a鈥 Bhean-uasal S矛ophort na thuirt e. Bha i feargach. Dh鈥檌arr i gum biodh Coinneach air a chur an gr猫im agus air a thoirt thuice.
听听听听听听听听听听听 An d猫idh greis, chuireadh an gr猫im e. Nuair a bha e ann an l脿thaireachd na Mna-uasail, thug e a-mach a chlach sh貌nraichte, agus thug e s霉il troimhpe.
听听听听听听听听听听听 鈥淭ha mi a鈥 faicinn anns an 霉ine romhainn,鈥 thuirt e, 鈥済un tig na S矛ophortaich gu ceann ann am br貌n mus bi cus ghinealach air a dhol seachad. Tha mi a鈥 faicinn ceann-cinnidh, am fear mu dheireadh dhiubh, a bhios bodhar is balbh. Bidh ceathrar mhac b脿n aige agus gheibh iad uile b脿s mus fhaigh e fh猫in b脿s. Bidh esan br貌nach oir bidh fios aige nach bi ceann-cinnidh aig Cloinn 鈥檌c Coinnich ann tuilleadh ann am Brathann no Cinn T脿ile.鈥
听听听听听听听听听听听 Lean Coinneach le a chuid f脿idheadaireachd. Bhiodh fios aige nach biodh e be貌 fada. 鈥淣uair a gheibh an ceann-cinnidh mu dheireadh b脿s,鈥 thuirt e, 鈥済heibh boireannach b脿n-churracach 脿s an taobh sear oighreachd, agus marbhaidh ise a piuthar. Mar chomharra gu bheil na rudan seo a鈥 tighinn gu bith, bidh ceathrar uachdaran m貌ra ann ri linn an t-S矛ophortaich mu dheireadh 鈥 MacCoinnich Ghe脿rrloch, an Siosalach, an Granndach agus MacLe貌id Ratharsair.
听听听听听听听听听听听 Bidh fear dhiubh sg貌r-fhiaclach, bidh fear be脿rn-mh矛olach, bidh fear leth-chiallach agus bidh am fear mu dheireadh mabach. Nuair a bheir ceann-cinnidh nan S矛ophortach s霉il timcheall air, agus nuair a ch矛 e na daoine sin, bidh fios aige gum faigh na mic gu l猫ir aige b脿s roimhe, gum faigh coigrich gr猫im air an fhearann aige, agus gun t猫id a chinneadh 脿 bith.鈥
听听听听听听听听听听听 Uill, cha robh fada aig Coinneach anns an t-saoghal seo. Chaidh a chur gu b脿s le teine ann an baraille tearra aig Gob na Cananaich. Ach d猫 thachair don chloich aige?
听听听听听听听听听听听 Thathar ag r脿dh, 脿s d猫idh dha a shealladh innse, gun do thilg e a鈥 chlach a-steach do tholl a chaidh a dh猫anamh le ladhar b脿. Thuirt e gum beirte leanabh le d脿 imleig, a lorgadh a鈥 chlach am broinn geadais. Bhiodh an d脿-shealladh aigesan mar a bh鈥 aig Coinneach fh猫in.
听听听听听听听听听听听 Nuair a thilg Coinneach a鈥 chlach air falbh, r霉raich feadhainn anns an lorg-coise b脿. Ach bha uisge a鈥 dr霉chdadh 脿s an talamh, agus cha do lorg iad a鈥 chlach. Agus cha do sguir an t-uisge. An ceann greis, bha glumag ann. An ceann greis eile, bha loch ann. B鈥 e sin Loch 脵saidh.
听听听听听听听听听听听 Tha e coltach gu bheil a鈥 chlach fo uisgeachan an locha fhathast. C貌 脿ige tha fios cuin a nochdas i a-rithist.

Abairtean na Litreach
d猫 thachair don chloich an d猫idh b脿s Choinnich?: what happened to the stone after Coinneach鈥檚 death?; cruinneachadh m貌r de dh鈥檜aislean ann an Caisteal Bhrathainn: a large collection of gentry in Brahan Castle; nach ann tric a chite uiread de chloinn uasal c貌mhla: not often would there be so many children of gentry [gathered] together; cho measail air uaisleachd: so [particularly] respectful of nobility; is motha a th鈥 ann do chlann ghillean-b霉ird agus do chlann ghillean-st脿baill: children of footmen and grooms matter more; gus an cuala a鈥 Bhean-uasal S矛ophort na thuirt e: until Lady Seaforth heard what he had said; air a thoirt thuice: brought to her; ann an l脿thaireachd na Mna-uasail: in the presence of the Lady; thug e s霉il troimhpe: he looked through it; gheibh iad uile b脿s mus fhaigh e fh猫in b脿s: they will all predecease him; le a chuid f脿idheadaireachd: with his prophesying; gheibh boireannach b脿n-churracach 脿s an taobh sear oighreachd: a white-hooded woman from the east will inherit his estate; gum faigh coigrich gr猫im air an fhearann aige: that strangers will gain control of his land; gun t猫id a chinneadh 脿 bith: that his race will come to an end; ann an baraille tearra aig Gob na Cananaich: in a barrel of tar at Chanonry Point; a lorgadh a鈥 chlach am broinn geadais: who would find the stone inside a pike [fish]; r霉raich feadhainn anns an lorg-coise b脿: some people rummaged around in the cow鈥檚 footprint.
Puing-ch脿nain na Litreach
Nuair a bheireadh e s霉il tron toll, chitheadh e sealladh: when he looked through the hole he would see a vision. Are you comfortable with the useage of bheireadh e s霉il 鈥渉e would look鈥 and chitheadh e 鈥渉e would see鈥 here? These are the verbs thoir and faic in the (active) conditional/past habitual. We use these forms when we want to express actions in the past that were done repeatedly over a period. The English translation 鈥渉e looked鈥 makes the verb appear as if it is simple past tense (a direct translation would be 鈥渉e would look鈥), but that would be thug, rather than bheireadh (thoir is an irregular verb). If I鈥檇 said nuair a thug e s霉il tron toll, chunnaic e sealladh, I would be referring to one incident in the past, rather than Coinneach鈥檚 repeated (habitual) behaviour of looking through the hole.
Gn脿thas-cainnt na Litreach
gum beirte leanabh le d脿 imleig: that a child would be born with two navels.
