After rescuing a draw against Ukraine at Wembley in September, England were expecting an easier assignment against San Marino last night to set them up for Tuesday's more awkward trip to Poland. England have only lost once to Poland, but that 2-0 defeat in Chorzow three decades ago helped ensure Alf Ramsey's side failed to qualify for the 1974 World Cup.
Wales and Scotland met each other on Friday night as they both sought a first win of the qualifying campaign ahead of daunting away games at Croatia and Belgium respectively. Northern Ireland take on Portugal on Tuesday, while the Republic of Ireland hosted Germany on Friday night before visiting the Faroe Islands in midweek.
