Many of us view a constant life of prayer and service as a feat reserved for clergy and those living the monastic life. In his first letter to the Thessalonians, St Paul however asks them to pray without ceasing. How is this even possible in the midst of our rapid and hectic schedules?
One of my favourite books, ‘the way of a Pilgrim’ by Lev Gillet is a story of a man who seeks to pray unceasingly. He embarks on a journey, and encounters a monk who teaches him the Jesus prayer, ‘Jesus Christ, son of God, have mercy on me, a sinner.’
This is a particularly beautiful and effective, as it can be repeated internally and become a default fall back and place of retreat, while navigating through daily challenges that we face. Praying internally enables us to connect with God instantly.
In the midst of various struggles and complications that we face, the beauty and simplicity of a simple prayer can lead us to that state of calm and rest that so many of us long for. Whatever our profession or occupation, through prayer we can be in communion with God, fully assured of His love and sovereignty. Â Â
Lord help us to realise that we do not need to be in the middle of a monastic wilderness to find You. Help us in the midst of our busy lives, to seek You in everything and to be faithful to whatever you have called us to do. Help us to rest in the knowledge of Your love, allowing You to work in and through us for the benefit of all.
Amen.
