Episode 3

For Baroque Spring, 大象传媒 Singers perform Scarlatti's Stabat Mater and James MacMillan's Tenebrae Responsories live from St Paul's Knightsbridge. Plus Baroque-inspired Tippett.

Live from St Paul's, Knightsbridge, as part of 大象传媒 Radio 3's Baroque Spring:

The 大象传媒 Singers conducted by Andrew Griffiths perform music for Holy Week including Domenico Scarlatti's exquisite Stabat Mater, depicting the grief of Mary as she weeps at the foot of the cross. This is contrasted with James MacMillan's startlingly powerful contemporary interpretation of three Tenebrae Responsories, setting texts usually sung during the days leading up to Easter. The programme also includes three settings of the Crucifixus by Antonio Lotti, including the famous version for 8 voices which ends the concert.

Plus the 大象传媒 Symphony Orchestra continue their focus this week on the music of Michael Tippett, with his Baroque-inspired Handel Fantasia.

Presented by Katie Derham and Richard Coles.
