Richard Chartres, Bishop of London

Good morning. Tonight after dark, throughout the Western Christian world, the new fire will be kindled to celebrate the resurrection of Jesus Christ. The ceremonies often begin in places associated with the dead and recall the empty tomb of Jesus himself.聽

There are moments in life when we recognise that we have no power in ourselves to help ourselves. We did not make the world; did not choose to be born and have no choice about our mortality yet paradoxically when we recognise this truth it comes with the possibility of being open to the deepest truth; to 鈥渂e still and know that I am God鈥.

Coming to terms with our limits does not remove our responsibility for our actions but it does relieve us of the immobilising anxiety that it is all down to us.

The journey to this day through the Lenten fast is meant to empty us of false comforters and illusions. Assisted by prayer and hope today we can wait in joyful expectation that there is an inexhaustible source of vitality which flows from the empty tomb.

Father you have blessed the grave and made it a bed of hope for your people; may your son Jesus Christ be with all who know fear, sickness or loneliness today; refresh them from the well spring of eternal life; raise them up to share in the joy of your Kingdom for you are a lover of all human kind.
