Monsignor Tony Rogers

Good morning.Ìý Fifty seven years ago today, our first television set was installed at home. I remember it, because it was the day that the beautiful Grace Kelly married Prince Rainier of Monaco, and because my dad and myself were both in love with her. We didn’t get a tv for the Coronation, but waited till this momentous occasion for our fourteen inch black and white set that cost an arm and a leg.

Ìý

Many of us can remember the momentous events of history, and what we were doing when we heard the news. I was convinced that a student who told me that a plane had crashed into the twin towers of the World Trade Centre, was the victim of a hoax. But nonetheless, I remember where I was and what she said.

Ìý

At different times in our lives memories and time spans seem to vary, even though the minutes and second tick away at the same rate. Children waiting for Christmas can’t believe that it was only twenty four hours since they last asked how long they’d have to wait.

Ìý

As we get older, time becomes precious. We think of it in terms of running out rather than dragging. Our memory span is able to recall things that happened decades ago as if they were last week, and we watch with sadness those who become muddled in their ability to distinguish between yesterday and today. We all need to make the most of our time – whatever our age.

Ìý

Lord of the ages, help us to treasure each day, and live it to the full. While we hold dear the memory of good times, save us from clinging tenaciously to the past, and help us to look forward to what lies ahead. Through Christ our Lord.Ìý Amen.
