The Open at ‘men-only’ Muirfield

This year’s will be played at the men-only club Muirfield.ÌýOf the nine courses used for the competition, three don’t allow women members (Muirfield, Royal St George's and Royal Troon). Peter Dawson, chief executive of golf’s governing body , says only 1% of the 3,000 courses in the UK have a single-sex membership policy and slightly more than half of these are women-only.ÌýBut should the R & A allow a high-profile championship like The Open to be played at a men-only club?

For more than 20 years, and her daughters - also doctors -Ìýhave run a refugee camp in Somalia.ÌýIt startedÌýas a one-room clinicÌýshe founded on the family farm in 1983, shortly after completing her medical training.ÌýLife was peaceful then but, whenÌýcivil war broke out seven years later,Ìýher hospitalityÌýextended to tens of thousands of people.ÌýToday the clinic is a 400-bed hospital andÌýthe surrounding famlandÌýshelters 90,000 displaced Somalis. Now she has written a bookÌýabout her extraordinary life.

China Forbes isÌýlead singer and songwriter forÌý, a multi-lingual, genre-busting band from Portland Oregon, with 11 band members which broke onto the music scene in the 90s.ÌýIn 2011, after being forced to take time off following an operation on her vocal chords, ChinaÌýdecided to return on a 'job-share' basis with the singer who had filled inÌýwhile she was away, soÌýshe could spend more time with her son.

China willÌýperform one of her new songs in the studio and talk about the challenges of being a mother and touring as lead vocalist of an international group.

Lauren Beukes – The Shining Girls

South African writer won the prestigious science fiction Arthur C. Clarke Award in 2011 for her novel, Zoo City. She has now written her third book, The Shining Girls, which isÌýset in Chicago. Harper is a 1930s drifter-turned-murderer who finds that he can jump through time, making him all but impossible to catch - until, that is, one of his victims survives and starts hunting him back.ÌýLauren joins Jane to discuss her detailed research methods and how violence against women inÌýSouth Africa influences her work.
