Excuse me鈥f I can鈥檛 muster much enthusiasm about that other red team winning the premiership yet again. I am a Liverpudlian, you see, still living on the memory of our glory days in the 70s and 80s 鈥� desperately hoping they鈥檒l be back鈥�.next season鈥r the one after that鈥�.or the one after鈥� you know how it is with football fans.

听

One of my best glory moments was when I scored the winning goal for my school team. I was at the edge of the penalty area and walloped the ball for all I was worth. I completely mis-kicked but it shot straight into the top corner of the net. No one knew I sliced the ball 鈥� and I wasn鈥檛 about to tell them. Oh my! I bathed in the glory until the end of term. I swear my teacher upped my score in the Maths test as a result!

听

Maybe I鈥檓 just a sad scouser, diverting attention away from another disappointing season, but I kinda think we鈥檙e missing our way when we shower glory on massively overpaid footballers and the like. The real stars in our world mostly go unnoticed because glory isn鈥檛 what they鈥檙e after.

听

One of my real stars is Sam Murphy, our church gardener. He is certainly no glory-hunter 鈥� just potters away, rain or shine, making the garden smile. I got angry when I once heard a man say, 鈥極h look someone鈥檚 planted some new roses.鈥� 鈥楽omeone?鈥�, I thought. 鈥楽omeone? They were planted by Sam!鈥� Then I remembered what Sam once said: 鈥業 just like being with the earth and watching God send the sun and the rain and then seeing how everything grows. Sometimes I just like to look at the roses and marvel.鈥�

听
