The Moller reaches Pasadena

The Mighty Möller had a highly successful few years in the Organ Power Pizza No. 2 restaurant in Pacific Beach, San Diego but by 1979 was on the move yet again. Two more businessmen, Gordon Belt and J. B. Nethercutt, bought the organ and agreed to donate it to the City of Pasadena. It was accepted by the city council in January 1979 and re-installation began shortly afterwards, culminating in the re-opening concert in April 1980 given by Tom Hazleton with Reginald Foort in attendance, shortly before his death.
The Civic Auditorium in Pasadena seats over three thousand people and is, therefore, an ideal venue acoustically for this amazing instrument. For a week in July 1996, 'The Organist Entertains' took a trip to America to record various concerts taking place as part of that particular year's annual American Theatre Organ Society convention. Pasadena was included in the itinerary and I will never forget the sight (and sound) of the Möller in that venue. As you may remember from the second part of our story, I had last seen (and, briefly, played!) the organ when it was in the ´óÏó´«Ã½'s Jubilee Studios in London and I was eight years old! By 1996, I certainly knew rather more about how to play instruments like that and it was a real thrill to be able to make some recordings on that famous organ which had spent so much of its life in the UK.
The Möller continues to entertain at Pasadena, 75 years after it first came to life in 1938, and long may it continue to do so. In many ways, the instrument was a 'one-off' having been specifically designed by Reginald Foort all those years ago and the fact that it is still providing music to this day is testament to his vision.
