The Independent Parliamentary Standards Authority is proposing to raise MP salaries by 11 per cent to 74,000 pounds from 66,000 pounds.
Peter Allen and Anna Foster with the day's news and sport. The chairman of the independent watchdog behind a proposed 11 per cent pay rise for MPs has been defending his plans on 5live today. The Independent Parliamentary Standards Authority is proposing to raise salaries to seventy four thousand pounds, offset, in part, by curbs to pensions, expenses and so-called 'golden goodbyes'. We hear from Labour MP Tom Harries and Conservative MP Sir Peter Bottomley giving their reaction to Sir Ian Kennedy's recommendation.
The Justice Secretary has called for a Serious Fraud Office investigation to look into security firm G4S and their electronic tag contracts. G4S and Serco have been found to have been charging tens of millions of pounds too much for the services. We speak to a former ACPO lead on tagging.
The Ashes has a new hero after Australian teenager Ashton Agar made the highest ever batting score for a number 11 on his Test debut at Trent Bridge today. He fell just short of a century, after being dismissed for 98. The 19 year old's parents spoke to us from the crowd.
