A series of tours suggested by the Victorian guidebook, Black's Picturesque Guide to Scotland. From the Trossachs to Iona and then onto the Isle of Staffa and to royal Deeside.

For centuries, Scotland was regarded as a place to avoid, and early travellers complained about the terrible weather, bad food, poor roads and the uncouth habits of the natives.

To find out what changed to make 'North Britain' an internationally celebrated tourist destination, historian Paul Murton follows a series of tours suggested by the popular Victorian guidebook, Black's Picturesque Guide to Scotland.

Paul travels from the Trossachs out to Iona and then onto the fabled Isle of Staffa. And in his second tour, he heads to royal Deeside to discover how in the 19th century, Scotland's mountains and glens became a playground for rich gentlemen, eager to test themselves against the forces of nature.
